HKBU Organises the Innovative AI Competition “AI x HK OpenCup 2022”

Over 600 participants joined the opening-cum-briefing of AI x HK OpenCup 2022 at HKBU.

Co-hosted by the Department of Computer Science and Faculty of Science, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), the opening-cum-briefing of an innovative AI competition named “AI x HK OpenCup 2022” was successfully held on 24 September 2022. It attracted over 600 participants from secondary schools and tertiary institutions on campus, in hybrid onsite and online mode.

Focusing on four Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations such as good health & well-being and quality education, participants will have to ideate innovative AI solutions in addressing one of these challenges in the Hong Kong context, with the objective to make positive social impact and promote sustainability.

In the opening speech, Professor Jiming Liu, Dean of Science and Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science cheered the participants, “AI encourages us to think out of the box and stimulate our innovative ideas. Through this competition, you will find out more possibilities of what AI can do and how they make positive impact to our society.”

Keynote speakers including Mr. Andy Fung, Lead of SDG Campus, Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development (HiESD), Dr. Charles Ka-Chun Cheung, Deputy Director of NVIDIA AI Technology Centre, Hong Kong and Dr. Jason Yongxiang Huang, Senior Researcher, Hong Kong Research Center, Huawei shared their visions on sustainable development, the latest AI technologies and potential applications. These invaluable insights helped the participants to better equip themselves for the OpenCup.

The competition is co-organised by HKBU and Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. It is technically sponsored by ACM Hong Kong Section, IEEE Hong Kong Section, HiESD and Innovation and Technology Commission and supported by various organisations and industrial partners such as ASTRI, Huawei, Microsoft, Nvidia, and SenseTime. The final pitch and ceremony of the OpenCup will be held in November 2022.
