The third edition of
AI x HK OpenCup (the OpenCup) was held successfully on 6 July 2024. This year’s event evolved into a one-day Generative AI (GenAI) bootcamp, featuring immersive learning workshops and competitions. The event attracted 20 teams from different secondary schools with over 100 participants to delve into the realm of AI technologies.
The bootcamp kicked off with an interactive warm-up activity, prompting students to identify global challenges outlined by the United Nations. This was followed by an engaging workshop, titled "GenAI Workshop with Diffusion Model", led by Mr. Cliff Ho, Senior Solutions Architect of NVIDIA AI Technology Center (Hong Kong). Participants gained valuable insights into GenAI image creation and techniques to enhance image quality. The subsequent GenAI image competition showcased students' creativity and proficiency in prompt engineering to create impactful visuals.
In the afternoon session, the focus shifted to GenAI text workshop on "Building Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Agents with Large Language Models (LLMs)". Students not only learned how RAG empowers language models to generate reliable results, but also delved into the importance of parameter configuration in text processing. The GenAI text competition further demonstrated students’ strong capabilities in adjusting parameters to achieve desirable outcomes.
At the end of the bootcamp, each team reflected on how GenAI technologies could be harnessed to address social issues in Hong Kong. Proposals ranged from AI-powered personalised learning models to improve education quality, cognitive training chatbots to enhance the well-being of dementia patients, and stable diffusion models to simulate urban development scenarios for sustainable urban development. "It's truly inspiring to witness students' creativity and innovation in ideating impactful solutions for social good," concluded Dr. Kristen Li, the organising committee of the AI x HK OpenCup.
"Participating in this bootcamp has been a rewarding experience that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the world of AI, learning and applying the newfound knowledge in innovative ways. We are excited to carry forward the lessons learned and continue exploring the potential of AI to shape a brighter, more sustainable future," shared by a member of the champion team from Po Leung Kuk Wu Chung College.
In line with leveraging AI technologies to address pressing challenges in Hong Kong, a new Merit Award for Sustainable Development was presented. The team from Diocesan Girls' School scooped this award with their project, "Combating Food Waste." Their proposal involved using a GenAI model to connect restaurants with local food banks, conducting real-time inventory analysis, and predicting demand to optimise food redistribution, thereby minimizing food waste.
Organised by Hong Kong Baptist University, hosted by the Department of Computer Science and supported by NVIDIA, AI x HK OpenCup 2024 serves as an innovation-enriched platform, fostering the growth of young talents in addressing global challenges through AI technologies. This year the OpenCup received robust support from various organisations, including Austria Albert Schweitzer Society China Chapter, HKBU Century Club, IEEE Hong Kong Section, Innovation and Technology Commission, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP).
