About

Professor Roland Chin is currently the Professor Emeritus in the Department of Computer Science and President Emeritus in the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Professor Chin joined HKBU as the fifth President and Vice-Chancellor from 2015 to 2020.

Prior to joining HKBU, Professor Chin was Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chair Professor of Computer Science at The University of Hong Kong from 2010 to 2015. Before that, he was Deputy President and Provost (2006-2010), Vice-President for Research and Development (2003-2006), and Chair Professor of Computer Science (1992-2010) at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. From 2001 to 2003, he was seconded to the Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) as the Vice President for Information Technology.

Professor Chin obtained his Bachelor’s and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering at the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1975 and 1979 respectively. He worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland for two years before starting his teaching career in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, from 1981 to 1995.

Professor Chin’s research is in the areas of computer vision, image processing, and pattern recognition. His work has been recognised with several awards, including the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF), and appointments to serve on editorial boards including the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, and Pattern Recognition. His research has been supported by funding bodies in the US and Hong Kong, including the NSF, NASA, the University Grants Committee (UGC) Areas of Excellence Scheme, Research Grants Council (RGC), and the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC).

Professor Chin is active in public service. He is a member of the HKSAR's Committee on Innovation, Technology and Reindustrialisation. He was a member of the UGC from 2004 to 2012, and Chairman of the RGC between 2005 and 2012 and held the post of Convenor of the Research Assessment Exercise 2006 and 2014. In addition, Professor Chin has served on numerous public bodies and committees, including the Employees Retraining Board, Quality Education Fund, Applied Research Council, Innovation and Technology Commission, Commission on Strategic Development and Cyberport Board of Directors, and Advisory Committee on Innovation and Technology. He was Chairman of the Hong Kong Education City Board of Directors, Chairman of the Science Museum Advisory Panel, as well as a board member of the ASTRI and a trustee of The Croucher Foundation.
