Dr. Li Chen and PhD Student Wanling Cai Won the Best Student Paper Award in UMAP’20

Dr. Li Chen, Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Science and PhD student Wanling Cai received the Best Student Paper Award for their co-authored paper “Predicting User Intents and Satisfaction with Dialogue-based Conversational Recommendations“ at the 28th ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (UMAP’20).

The award-winning paper has aimed to address how to automatically infer users’ intents and their satisfaction with dialogue-based recommendations, which is important for enhancing the conversational system’s capability of better understanding users and hence providing more accurate and personalized information. In this work, they have not only established two hierarchical taxonomies respectively for classifying user intents and recommender actions, but also leveraged various types of predictive features, especially context features and dialogue behavior features, into the process of augmenting prediction accuracy via certain machine learning methods.

The 4-day Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (UMAP) is one of the leading international conferences for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users or to groups of users, and that collect, represent, and model user information.
