The FinTech Social Hackathon, organised by the Laboratory for AI-Powered Financial Technologies (AIFT), successfully concluded on 28 November 2024, at the Hong Kong Science Park. This year’s theme, “Enhancing Hong Kong Citizens’ Understanding of MPF Investment for Better Retirement Planning,” prompted participants to develop innovative applications to improve citizens’ financial literacy.

The team of Business Computing and Data Analytics (BCDA), consisting of Year 2 undergraduates Li Hiu Laam, Wu Man Ip, Ng Cheuk Wai, and Wong King Chun, impressed the judges with their cutting-edge application, earning the Second Runner-Up award. Their project utilised AI and large language model chatbots to create a user-friendly app designed to help Hong Kong employees navigate their MPF investments more effectively. The app offers analytical tools to compare different MPF options, empowering users to make informed decisions tailored to their individual needs and encouraging proactive retirement planning.

“This competition was an incredible learning experience, “Li Hiu Laam, the team representative shared. “We applied our data analytics and programming skills, conducted thorough market research on MPF, gathered insights directly from citizens, and employed design thinking to develop our solution. This entire process was both challenging and rewarding, pushing us to think outside the box and collaborate effectively as a team.”

The FinTech Social Hackathon, hosted by AIFT, encourages participants to leverage AI technologies to create solutions that enhance Hong Kong employees' understanding of MPF and strengthen retirement security.
