The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) in 2009, aims at attracting the best and brightest students from all over the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong.
Fellowship Award
HKPFS Nominees
The Department offers HK$960,000 (approx. US$123,000) to RPg students who have been successfully nominated by the University under HKPFS during 4-year study. Total Conference and Research-related Travel Allowance is HK$60,000 (approx. US$7,800) during the 4-year study.
HKPFS Awardees
Upon successful admission to our department's PhD programme via HKPFS, awardees will be offered HK$1,920,000 (approx. US$246,000).
Entrance Award ^
HK$40,000 (approx. US$5,000) per awardee in the 1st year;
Scholarship for Outstanding Performance^
HK$26,000 (approx. US$3,300) in the subsequent 2 years
Stipend (tax-free) #
HK$480,000 (approx. US$62,000) per year for four years;
Tuition Waiver ^
First year tuition waiver (HK$44,500 for AY2025/26); tuition waivers for second, third and fourth year of study are subject to satisfactory academic progress;
Conference and Research-related Travel Allowance +
HK$102,000 (approx. US$13,000) during 4-year study;
Accommodation ^
Guarantee for first year on a request basis

Eligibility
Those who are seeking admission as new full-time PhD students, irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.
Selection Criteria
While the academic excellence is of prime consideration, the Review Panels will take into account, but is not limited to, the six yardsticks below for the selection of candidates:
Academic excellence;
Research ability and potential;
Institutional Support;
Cultural Diversity;
Leadership ability and societal responsibility; and
Communication, interpersonal skills.
Entrance and English Proficiency Requirements
Applicants seeking admission to the PhD degree programme should possess:
(a) a master's degree from a recognized university or comparable institution; or
(b) any other qualification deemed by the Graduate School of HKBU to be acceptable for this purpose.
Candidates under paragraph (b) may be required to take a qualifying examination, in which event their progress shall be reported to the Graduate School at the end of their first year of study.
For applicants from non-English speaking universities, unless they provide proof that English is the language of instruction, they are required to provide score results of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IETLS). This requirement is exempted if applicants' proposed PhD studies/programmes are specifically in non-English medium, e.g. in Chinese language. The TOEFL institution code of HKBU is 9467.
